State Climb is a newly established, community-focused climbing gym in Culpeper, VA. It opened late January 2020 in the former State Theatre which was built in 1938. The main entrance for the State Climb is at the rear of the building, opening to a large climbing area that features “a cave” and a wall with LED lights that is operated by a computer application.

The gym includes an active bouldering area and Kilter Board. They are working on building out tall walls with auto-belays, top-roping, lead climbing, speed climbing. They offer memberships, classes, summer camps, birthday parties, and much more.

If you’re not sure what a Kilter Board is, we weren’t either. It’s an app-controlled, light-up training wall where you can tap into a database of problems created by the climbing community. With an Ipad, you can even change the configuration of the climb. The Kilter Board features unique and custom holds designed that light up around their edge.

State Climb is about to start a big expansion project which will really add a lot of space and climbs to their facility. The construction is supposed to be finished for their re-grand opening on June 12, 2021.

Today we headed to Culpeper to check out a new to us rock climbing facility. My kids had a wonderful time. When we first arrived, we were greeted by the owner’s friendly dog. That was a plus for my kids.
Dos Allen (owner) soon arrived to help us get situated. He fit the kids with climbing shoes and gave us a tour of the place. Then the climbing began. The kids tried out the bouldering area but really enjoyed the auto-belay wall.

The staff was very friendly and went out of their way to make sure my kids had a great time and that they were successful in their climbs. The kids did not want to leave. They got in a great workout and had fun doing it.
We will definitely be back.
An added plus…State Climb is only a 7 min. drive from our favorite ice cream stop–The Ole Country Store & Bakery. If you visit on a Thursday, ice cream cones are $1 from 3 – 5 p.m.
Update: We made it back to State Climb in July 2022. Once again, my kids had a great time!
