📜 What Is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth, short for June Nineteenth, marks the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the end of the Civil War and freedom for the last enslaved African Americans—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Celebrated as the oldest nationally recognized commemoration of the end of slavery in the U.S., Juneteenth is a powerful reminder of resilience, liberation, and the ongoing pursuit of justice and equality. In 2021, it became a federal holiday.
