Snead’s Asparagus Farm

There’s not another play area in central Virginia quite like Snead’s Asparagus Farm.

This is such a fun spot; your kids won’t want to leave. Snead’s is a family farm located about 11 miles from Fredericksburg. It is a child’s paradise with animals, trails, play areas, a small log cabin and creeks. Your children can let their imagination run wild in the whimsical woodland play area. Here there are paths, swings, a teepee, and a wormhole. My children like riding the farm’s tricycles through this area. There are also pedal trucks available.

Most of the farm has full sun, but the mountain slides (there are four), swings, zip-line and creek area have full shade. These shaded areas are great places to hang out during the hot summer. There’s also an open-air barn with a picnic table, hay bales, and rope swings. This is a great spot to take a snack break and do some hay bale jumping. Children also enjoy climbing on the helicopter near the sheep. They will also enjoy visiting the other farm animals. Snead’s has horses, chickens, and even llamas.

About a year ago in 2021, hiking trails were added to Snead’s. This adds another dimension to Snead’s. There are four trails with varying lengths. All trails start just across the creek. Follow the signs. The longest trail is 2.5 miles long. The Unicorn Trail is especially fun because there are hidden animals along the way.

Snead’s offers PYO sunflowers in late summer, pumpkins in the fall & Christmas trees in December. Snead’s also offers a CSA. The 2022 CSA gives you a weekly box of produce May-August, plus pumpkins, and opportunities to pick your own produce. During the summer months they have a roadside produce stand.

Snead’s operating hours change throughout the season. They are usually open to the public 9 am – 6 pm late April-October. Daily admission is $7/pp, 2 & under are FREE. These prices do change for the Fall Festival.

Snead’s Fall Festival 2022 runs from Sept. 24 through Oct. 31. The prices below are for the 2022 season. On Columbus Day, Snead’s offers a military discount. Even though a visit during the Fall Festival is a bit pricey, you’ll get your money’s worth if you end up staying at least a couple of hours.

Sept 10-11, 17-18: Soft opening weekends, no hayrides, no food vendors, BYO food, $10 pp
Sept 24 – Oct 31, 2022: Fall Festival-Weekdays-$10 pp (unlimited hayrides/outside food welcome), Weekends-$15 pp (unlimited hayrides/food vendors/no outside food)
Oct 10, 2022: Military Day–(All current & retired military + their families got in for $7). General admission is $15.

The prices vary for Snead’s pumpkins. You can pick your own “very large” pumpkin from the large fields for $8. Their smaller pumpkins (fields are marked) are $4 a piece. They have “jumbo” gourds available for $12. You are able to drive right up to the pumpkin fields to pick. This makes it easy to carry your pumpkins. They do have pre-picked pumpkins available to purchase as well. They also advertise that they have the best prices for large pumpkins. I’ve never checked. If you head to Snead’s in September, you should still be able to see their sunflowers. You can pick your own sunflowers, they are usually $1/stem.

During the Fall Festival food vendors are available and hayrides are included in the price plus you get to enjoy all the fun amenities the farm already offers.

Dogs on a leash are welcome here. Make sure to bring your own food and water, and don’t forget to pack sunscreen and bug spray. You will find plenty of seating and picnic tables throughout the property. There are 2 port-a-potties with hand sanitizer available.

New (2022) this year: On fall weekends, they will have on-site demonstration of old-fashioned hand-cranked apple cider pressing, with freshly pressed cider available for purchase.

We used to frequent Snead’s Asparagus Farm when the kids were younger, so our recent visit was a great opportunity to reminisce. My kids did not want to leave.

During this visit, we stayed for 3 hours. We would have stayed longer, but Snead’s was closing. Plan at least 2 hours for your visit.
